Privacy Policy
The short version. We don't run analytics, we don't collect crash reports, and we don't operate servers that store information about you. Online play in R.A.F.O. is provided by Epic Online Services, and matches are hosted by players. This website has no tracking cookies.
This policy explains what information R.A.F.O. — Roll Around & Find Out ("the game") and this website (thedevelopmentsofamadman.com) use, why, and who it is shared with. Both are made by The Developments of a Madman ("we", "us").
1. Information stored on your own device
The game saves the following on your computer so it can remember your preferences. It is not sent to us.
- The player name you choose and your ball colour
- The address of the last server you joined by IP
- Your settings: video, audio, sensitivity, vibration, invert-look and key bindings
- Log files the game writes for troubleshooting
You can delete this information at any time by uninstalling the game and removing its Saved folder.
2. Online play and Epic Online Services
Online features (signing in, finding and joining matches, and connecting to other players) are provided by Epic Online Services (EOS), operated by Epic Games, Inc. This applies to both the Steam and Epic Games Store versions. To provide these features, the game signs you in to EOS, and Epic processes:
- Your account identifiers. Your Epic account ID and an EOS player ID for this game. If you play the Steam version, your Steam ID is used to sign you in to EOS instead of an Epic account.
- Basic profile. Your display name.
- Friends list and presence, so the game can show which friends are online and help you play together. The game does not store your friends list.
- Match listings. When you host a match, its name, map, game mode, number of bots, game version and whether it has a password are published so other players can find it. The password itself is never published.
- Connection information. Your IP address, which is needed to connect players to each other, including through Epic's relay service.
- Play session information. Epic Online Services records when you start and end an online session, as part of how the service operates.
- Player reports. If you report another player, Epic receives your EOS player ID, theirs, the reason you picked, and a note of the match: both display names, the map, the game mode, the game version and how long the match had been running. We review reports in Epic's developer tools to decide whether to act. The reported player is not told who reported them.
- Ownership. If you sign in with an Epic account, the game asks Epic whether your account owns R.A.F.O. before allowing online play.
- Bans. If we ban an account from online play, Epic keeps a record of the EOS player ID and when the ban starts and ends. The game checks that record when you sign in and when you join a match. A host who turns a banned player away learns only that they were banned and the ban's reference number.
Epic's handling of this information is governed by the Epic Games Privacy Policy. If you play the Steam version, Valve's Steam Privacy Policy also applies.
3. Information shared with other players
When you play online or on a local network, other players in the same match can see:
- Your display name and ball colour
- Chat messages you send
- Your voice, if voice chat is on (see below)
- Your in-game actions, scores and statistics for that match
Voice chat
When voice chat is on, what your microphone picks up is sent through the match host's computer (not through us or Epic) to the players the game lets hear you: your team in team modes, everyone in other modes, and everyone before and after a match. By default the microphone transmits whenever you speak ("open mic"). You can switch to push-to-talk, or turn voice chat off, in Options.
Death Mic is on by default. It opens your microphone for four seconds when you are knocked out, to the player who knocked you out and anyone nearby, even if you use push-to-talk. You can turn it off when joining a match or in Options.
The game does not record or store voice. Muting a player stops their voice being sent to you.
Matches are hosted by players, not by us
A player who hosts a match (or runs a dedicated server) can see the information above, and their copy of the game keeps records on their own computer:
- a log file that includes chat messages and connection information
- if they ban a player, a list with that player's online ID, display name and the reason given
We cannot see, control or delete records kept on another player's computer. If you join a match by typing an IP address, or play on a local network, the host can also see your IP address.
4. This website
You can use this site without an account. It has no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies.
- Hosting. The site is served by Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and basic request details (such as browser type and the page requested) to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse.
- Fonts. Pages load typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser sends your IP address to Google when a page loads.
- Newsletter. If you sign up for updates, your email address is stored with our mailing-list provider and used only to send studio and R.A.F.O. news. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
5. When you email us
If you contact us for support, press or anything else, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach, such as screenshots or log files. We use this only to reply and to fix the problem you reported, and we keep it for up to two years in case the problem comes back.
6. What we do not do
- We do not collect analytics or usage statistics.
- We do not collect crash reports.
- We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
- We do not ask for your real name, date of birth or payment details. Purchases are handled entirely by the store you bought the game from.
7. Children
The game and this website are not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The game has text and voice chat with other players. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the game, contact us and we will help.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the EU and UK GDPR or California's CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information about you, or to object to how it is used.
- Information on your device (section 1) is under your control and you can delete it yourself.
- Information held by Epic or Valve (section 2) is controlled by them. Use the privacy tools in your Epic or Steam account, or contact them directly.
- For anything else, or if you are unsure, email us and we will help. We respond within 30 days.
Where the GDPR applies, the legal basis for processing game data is the performance of our agreement with you: providing the online features of a game you chose to play. For the newsletter it is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
9. Changes to this policy
If the game or website changes in a way that affects your information (for example if we add official servers or crash reporting), we will update this policy and change the effective date above.
